Faculty Bio Information

Jerry Chi, MBA, Ph.D., Ph.D. 

 

Dr. Jerry Chi. Professor of Business, Chair of the Department of Business Administration and MBA Program Director. He was named Educator of the Year in 2007 from Southwestern Adventist  University and Best Alumnus Award in 2009 from Taiwan Adventist College.

He has served Southwestern Adventist University as a business professor for 13 years since 1996.  

He received his B.A. in Theology, B. B. A. in Business Administration (Accounting) from Taiwan Adventist College, M.B.A. in Business Administration from Andrews University, Ph.D. in Leadership and Administration with minor in Business Management from Andrews University, second Ph.D. in Statistics and Research Evaluation and minor in Computer Science from Illinois State University.   He is currently working on his third Ph.D. in e-Commerce Marketing.

Dr. Chi's instructional goal is to provide interdisciplinary education for business students and professionals. His instructional strategy is to integrate the professional computer skills, research methods, theories, application and project techniques all together for the business courses he teaches.   He was a founder of SWAU SIFE program (Students in Free Enterprise) and led the team to win 7 regional championships (1997-2006) and National Runner-Up in 2006. 

He was a certified piano teacher with a teaching certification from the London Royal Music School and a first professional violinist with experiences serving several city orchestras and symphonies in Illinois.  He has even won second place twice in U.S. university table tennis tournaments.  He also enjoys playing basketball and baseball. 

Dr. Chester Baker, DBA

 

     Dr. Chester A. Baker, associate professor of management, has twenty one years of experience teaching management courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels.  Though the years Dr. Baker has thought at Northern Caribbean University, Mandeville , Jamaica, West Indies; Alabama A&M University, and Houston-Tillotson University.  Dr. Baker has made a number of case presentations and served as discussant at amy conferences for the Society for Case Research (SCR).  He has attended and participated as discussant at conferences sponsored by the Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM).  He has attended CIBER (Center for International Business Education and Research) Conference, Price-Bobson Symposium for Entrepreneurship Educators, and other seminars for personal development. Dr. Baker enjoys teaching and working with students and look forward to spending the rest of his work life helping students develop themselves scholastically, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually.  In 1994, Dr. Baker was selected "Who is Who" among America Teachers.  He holds an earned doctorate in management from United States International University, in San Diego, California.

Prof. Roger Dunder

 

     Roger Dunder, Associate Professor of Business, started his career in 1983 teaching mathematics and physics. Later he worked as a missionary in Africa where he taught for 6 years at Tanzania Adventist College. He also worked in the Philippines for 6 years teaching in the MBA program of the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies. In addition to teaching he was the President of NRJ Group, Inc. He organized this company with a couple of partners to source and import products from China. Most recently he has been the Manager for Web Development for a marketing firm called Solidvapor. He completed a bachelor degree in biophysics from Andrews University. Later he studied business and completed his MBA from Indiana University Kokomo. He has also studied New Media from the IUPUI School of Informatics. His interests are in marketing, e-commerce / web design, international business, entrepreneurship, graphic design and photography.

Dr. Fred Harder Ph.D.

     Dr. Harder graduated from Andrews University with a B.S. in Business Administration and an M.A. in School Administration. Married Virginia Flory and had two children, Holly and Fred.  Holly graduated with an M.A. in Physical Therapy from Loma Linda University and married Greg Homer, a physician specializing in Radiology. Fred graduated from SWAU with a B.S. in computer Science, married Leona Backy (a communications graduate of SWAU), and now manages the computer network for Choice Homes in Dallas. Spent one year in the jungles of Venezuela on a mammal expedition for Smithsonian Institution. Spent three years as Business Manager of San Fernando Valley Academy in CA. Graduated from University of California at Los Angeles with a M.A., C. Phil., and Ph.D. in Economics.  Returned to Andrews University as Professor of Economics. haired the Divisions of Business at Union College and then Walla Walla College.  Returned to Union College as Vice President and Business Manager.  Went on to Columbia Union College as Vice President and Business Manager. Became Vice President of Hartland Bank in Austin, TX.  Formed and managed Harder Properties Inc. (a real estate company), in Austin until it sold. Was elected Vice President for Enrollment at Southwestern   Adventist University and served until retiring in 2006.

 Prof. Karen Senecal, MBA, CPA

Karen L. Senecal, ‘81, teaches accounting. After earning her BBA in accounting at SWAU, she earned a M.A.T. from Andrews University in 1982 and taught at Mount Pisgah Academy from 1982-1993. She earned an MBA from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1995. While in the DFW area from 1993-1997, she worked as an accountant at Medical Advocacy Services for Healthcare, Inc. and at The DayCare Associates of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. She taught accounting at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA, for 2 years and at Washington College, Chestertown, MD, for 6 years. She is a licensed CPA. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Accounting Association.  Her teaching interests are in financial and tax.

 

 

 

Prof. Judith Miles

     Judith Foll Miles, Associate Professor, has taught in the Business and Computer Science department since 1979.  She attended Andrews University and earned a bachelor’s degree in business and education in 1969, and continued to study at Loma Linda University where she completed a master of arts degree in business education in 1987. Mrs. Miles also completed additional graduate courses in computer science at Tarleton State University and Texas Women’s University.  Her teaching career started at Forrest Lake Academy, Golden Gate Academy and San Diego Academy.  After accepting a call to SWAU, she started a two-year associate degree in word processing in 1981.  SWAU was the first Adventist college to have such a program.  Mrs. Miles continued developing the word processing and computer lab and by 1990 she began teaching computer literacy.  The courses she teaches include: Advanced Software, E-commerce & Web Design, Business Communication, Essential Computer Skills, and Computer Literacy.  The Internet courses include these courses plus, Administrative Records & Procedures, Office Systems Technology, and Office Systems Training and Management.

 

Prof. David Phillips

 

     Prof. David Phillips received his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in   business management, science, and a minor in art from Pacific Union College in 1995.  He later went on to continue his education and earned a master’s degree in health administration from Loma Linda University in 1999.  David worked one year with the Loma Linda University Medical Center’s marketing department, and five years as the Executive Director of the Riverside Medical Foundation, a nonprofit private foundation, and as a consultant years after.  Since that time, David now works as the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Southwestern Adventist University and teaches a business class, Consumer Behavior.

Professor Sarah Proctor

     

Sarah Proctor, Adjunct Professor, graduated from SWAU in 1988 with a BBA in Accounting, finishing her undergraduate degree through the Adult Degree Program.  In 2007, she received her MBA from SWAU.  Presently, she works full time as VP of Finance at All Church Home for Children, a non profit, social services organization in Fort Worth, Texas.  Her other work experience includes accounting and financial management in several organizations in various industries - retail, wholesale, manufacturing, distribution, telecommunications, and public accounting. 

Dr. Radhames Lizardo, MBA, CPA,  Ph.D. 

Radhamés A Lizardo is a professor of Finance and Accounting in the School of Business at Southwestern Adventist University, in Keene, Texas. Professor Lizardo holds a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Texas, an M.S in accounting from the University of North Texas, an M.B.A. in finance from the Inter-American University, and a B.S. in accounting from the Antillean Adventist University. He is a Certified Public Accountant in Texas. He is also a member of the Financial Management Association, the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Institute of Management Accountants. Prior to 1994, Dr. Lizardo was an Assistant Professor of Accounting and Finance at Atlanctic Union College. Dr. Lizardo worked for the General Conference Auditing Service from 1986-1991 as a staff auditor and for Antillean Adventist University from 1983-1986 as an Assistant Professor of Business. His research interests are in financial markets behavior and international finance. Professor Lizardo has published in The Journal of International Trade & Economic Development, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions & Money, Global Economy Journal, Energy Economics, and the prestigious Cato Journal.

 

 

Dr. Daryl Thomas, Ph.D.  

 

     Dr. Daryl Thomas. Professor of MBA program, chair of the department of Computer Science.  He received his BS and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University.  

Professor Maryon Westerman

 

     Maryon Westerman received her B.B.A. in Management from Andrews University in 1993. She continued her studies at Andrews University and completed her M.B.A. in 1994.  While at Andrews she was inducted into both Delta Mu Delta (Business Honor Society) and Omicron Delta Epsilon (Economics Honor Society).

Maryon has over twelve years experience in small business management, which includes an extensive background in business development, training program development and implementation, and practical experience in human resource management.  She has served as Business Manager for Westerman & Associates, since 1995.


Dr.  J.T. Shim, MBA, Ph.D.

Three undergraduate degrees from SAU and several leadership positions in student government including president; MBA Rollins, PhD UCF in MIS, minor accounting. Internships on Capitol Hill with 3 US Representatives sampled from both sides of the aisle; Internships in Tallahassee with state senator governor. Recently applied for White House Fellowship...but was not one of the very few selected.

 First job out of college involved hospital management and marketing in Chattanooga, TN and Rocky Mount, NC.

.On­e summer I had the privilege of working in an organization with a global marketing mentality in their office in France. Although one of the titles I held was soup chef, we were all part of an integrated team whose goals included wowing customers so that current clients would provide word-of-mouth marketing and referrals….in fact, powerful word-of-mouth endorsement was how I came to work there in the first place.

 Taught private piano lessons; for Kaplan (GMAT, P/SAT, portions of MCAT); UCF—programming and database; UT—statistics; FHCHS—marketing.

 One wife, one dog, one son, one daughter, “acquired” in that order. In my spare time: chess, fly, photography, reading and research.



Professor Aaron Moses

 

Aaron Moses, Adjunct Professor, graduated from Northwood University in 2000 with a BBA in Management.  Aaron returned to school after working as a manager in the automotive industry for 6 years, and received his M.S. in Healthcare Administration in 2008 from the University of Texas at Arlington.  Currently Aaron is a Graduate Teaching Associate and a 2nd year Ph.D candidate in the College of Business Administration Management department at the University of Texas at Arlington.   

While attending UTA he was invited to become a lifetime member of Beta Gamma Sigma (international honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a business program accredited by AACSB International - from the BGS website).  Additionally he was recognized as a University Scholar – recognition for the top 1% of students.

Aaron’s current interest lies in becoming an excellent instructor in the field of Management.  His research covers broad interests in organizational behavior and human resource management, particularly work roles, compensation and antecedents of turnover (including headhunting and poaching).  Specifically, he is interested in person-environment fit, multifaceted jobs (jobs made up of more than one distinctly different roles, tasks, or occupations), and how headhunting and/or poaching and the perception of potential outside compensation effects intent to turnover, actual turnover and commitment, with the underlying goal is to increase worker retention.
